How to Check the Oil Level in a Car – Five Steps

One of the first things a lot of our North Haven customers learn about automotive maintenance is how to check car oil. It’s simple. Once you do it the first time, you’ll never forget. Of course, if you need any help at all, feel free toschedule a service appointment with us. Here’s how to check the oil level in a car:

  1. Make sure the car is off and the engine has had enough time to cool down.
  2. Open the hood and locate the dipstick.
  3. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag or paper towel.
  4. Stick the dipstick back in all the way.
  5. Pull out the dipstick again and examine the tip.

How to Read the Dipstick

In order to know how to check car oil, you need to know how to read the dipstick. There is a cross-hatched area on at least one side of the dipstick near the tip. Oil should reach somewhere inside that area. If it does not, add a quart of oil, run your car’s engine, turn the car off, then check the oil again.
